Why Life should be Humbling

When I was younger, I never understood the value of life. I lived life as if it was unlimited and timeless. As if the world couldn’t end in a flash. I grew up seeing life from a microscopic viewpoint, believing the world was so huge. As children, that’s what we all think. The world looks massive and everything seems fun. It wasn’t until I grew older, that I realised how far from the truth it was and that the reality I thought I was living in, was in actual fact, a fantasy. It was a rude awakening I wasn’t prepared for. The world may be ‘your oyster’ but life is short. It comes at you fast.

The world we live in is full of evil. It is not every day that we see a genuine act of humility displayed. Indirectly and directly, people experience various levels of suffering and pain, every day, at the hands of their very own kind. The reality of evil in this life can make it difficult for a person to believe that their life holds any kind of value and worthiness. More often, it has been seen that most people often disregard their existence and forget about how much of an important asset they are in this life. Some, if not most, don’t realise how precious their existence on Earth is and how important it is to treasure every second you get.

What inspired me to write this particular post was when the world learnt about the death of Chadwick Boseman on August 28th 2020, at age 43. His death and the cause behind his death were so devastating that they brought me to tears. I just couldn’t fathom the harsh reality. It also made me think about the death of another young black king, Kobe Bryant, who died on 26 January 2020, age 41 and his daughter Gianna Bryant, age 13.

Chadwick Boseman

What was so heart-wrenching about his death was that he was suffering in silence. Suffering from Colorectal Cancer for 4 years without the world knowing. Yet, during all those years, he fought through and delivered great movies! He never let cancer get in the way of still living his life. He didn’t allow that to limit him. Those mere thoughts were what humbled me further. I started praying and being so thankful and grateful for being alive and healthy! The world saw a man who was a true king, a soldier, a man who was extremely strong and had a beautiful soul. Although I agree with all, I saw a man who accepted that he was slowly dying, wasn’t going to live long and allowed life to humble him. If you watch some of his interviews, you’ll see a man who knew his purpose, who understood how important it was to live life to the fullest, still accomplishing your goals and appreciating every day he got. He didn’t take any second for granted.

Kobe and Gianna Bryant

Hearing about the death of Kobe and ‘Gigi’ was overwhelming because I couldn’t just imagine something like that being so true. And the first thing that ran through my mind was “Imagine how his wife and other daughters must be feeling right now!” Today, you have your loved ones alive, but tomorrow, they are no longer. Such an indescribable feeling. Your life will never be the same. Kobe was a role model to many and such an inspiration. Gigi was following in her dad’s footsteps and was a very bright, bold and determined young girl. But unfortunately, her life, just like her dad’s, was cut short. But this beauty is that they have left their mark and imprint on the world. They have left an impactful legacy behind and many people, including their family, are still celebrating them till late.

It was very disappointing when many trolls bullied Chad online for his appearance, mocked him and ran with their false assumptions about him. When I first saw his dramatic weight loss, I was so shocked, because it wasn’t expected. My thoughts were “Wow. Being a celebrity isn’t easy at all. Maybe he’s going through a lot that is taking a toll on his physical health” 😦 Little did I know that he indeed was suffering from an illness. I can only just imagine how he must have felt, for him to turn off his comments on Instagram.
It is scary to know that there is a possibility that we or our loved ones may not be here tomorrow. It is scary to know that there is a possibility that we may have said something negative to someone, not knowing that they are suffering on the inside. It is scary and disappointing to know, that even after all of this, people still fail to show compassion and sympathy towards others. After the death of Kobe and Gigi, people were coming out and putting a negative label on his name, as well as accusing him of things, which were insensitive towards his family, who were grieving their loss.

What can you learn from these?
– Life is short
– Love who you are and where you are. You’ll always grow
– Never take life and those around you for granted
– Be Kind and mindful of what you say to others
– Do not waste time – time doesn’t wait for anyone

I say all this to remind us all that we should always be humble, no matter what! We should learn to appreciate everything, even the smallest things we have and that we do! It may be nothing to you, but it is something to others. Be grateful. Somebody out there wishes they were in the same situation you are in. Love life and take pride in having the people around you because some people don’t have anyone or their loved ones around. Every day is a new day but is an opportunity for you to give thanks, be grateful and do better!

  2. This is well said deeply from a real life prospect(Truth). We as human we tend to judge one another, jumping into conclusions quickly without getting the facts. What you have written will truly inspire alot to take a step to change their prospects of others and will hopefully enable growth and always remember to love your neighbours as you would love yourself but let’s not forget the overall of truly loving your self first, is a very essential component of life. Well done and keep up the blessed work🙏🏾
